Games –
Duck duck goose
Students sit in a large circle. One student starts the game and walks around the circle tapping the head of the players saying “duck” then chooses one person and says “goose.” The goose tries to catch the other student before that students runs around the circle and sits in the seat of the goose. Now the goose gets to walk around the circle and choose the next goose. This game is mostly fun and can be used as a reward, but could also be used to teach some vocabulary. Other words could be exchanged such as “sit” and “run” or “stop” and “go.”
Guessing game – 22
For this game you fill a large jar with several small items and students each guess how many items are in the jar. The person who wins receives a prize. Before playing this game, students should have already learned to count to a relatively high number. This will be a fun test for the students. Only answers in English should be accepted.
Telephone –
Students sit in a circle and one students makes up a sentence. The first student whispers the sentence to their neighbor and the neighbor continues this. The final person repeats the sentence and there will be funny and surprising changes. I think this is a good “ice breaker” game for adults or students with advanced English. It’s fun for them because although they practice listening and speaking skills, they aren’t worried about making mistakes because nobody will realize who is making the mistakes.
Red Light Green Light
The teacher stands at the opposite side of the room of the students and students stand in a line straight across. The goal is for the students to reach the teacher. When the teacher yells, “green light,” students move as fast as possible in the direction of the teacher. When the teacher yells, “red light” students must freeze in their place. This game can also be used while teaching different actions such as walk, dance, wiggle, ect. This would be a good game for young learners and after finishing the game students should be focused and ready to learn again.
Name It!
Everybody sits in a circle and one player holds a ball. A category is chosen for example, “fruit.” The person with the ball has 3 seconds to choose a fruit and then passes the ball to another player. If that player can not think of a fruit, then they are out. The game continues until there is only one player left and then the game is restarted with a new category. This game would work well for students who have a large vocabulary. It could also be used for younger learners if you taught them a set of vocabulary that day that all fell in a certain category. The game could be repeated using the same category.
# Alphabet Animal Game: Have the student place their seat in a circle in the class.Good game to get the students all involved as you can pick any topic.Pick a topic the students like,and watch the game flow,and faulter.Good game for student to use their brain as they have to think of the english word.Always brings a happy mood to the class.
# Balloon Charades:(packet of balloons,paper and scissors,pen). Gives students a chance to express themselves in a different way and enjoy themselves.Also student involvement everyone has their say in trying to guess what is being acted out.
# Sleeping Lions: Another game for students to interact with each other and also the teacher can join in on this game.Good way to find out whom are the “Clowns” in your class(the Hunters) by seeing how they will try and get the Lions to smile or laugh.
# Telephone: Sentence making excercise and vocabulary practise normally with a funny twist at the end.Have the students stand in a line side by side close to each other so easy to turn and whisper in their ear.
As I haven’t read my book yet (Insert sheepish grin and big, apologetic, puppy-dog eyes), let me share games that I usually do in the classroom:
1. Erase the fish! (For young kids) — I got this from my former colleague, Nghia, so I’m not totally going to take credit from it. Draw a line dividing the board, the other half is for you, the other half, for the kids. At first, draw a big fish on both parts. Ask a kid a question, usually to review what has been studied. If his answer is correct, then you can start the contest on on the count of 3, on who gets to erase the fish as fast as they can. Always let the kids win the game, it makes them go wild. As the game progresses, pretend to cheat by drawing a smaller fish on your part, and a bigger fish on their part, but still, always let them win the game. If they don’t manage to answer the question before the contest starts, give them the correct answer, or don’t let them play until it’s their turn again.
2. Word tennis (For older kids) — This is basically like throwing words at each other. Play “Paper,scissors,stone” to decide on who goes first. The first one should say any English word, and the second student should reply with another English word. The first student replies back, and so on and so forth. For example:
Student 1: “table”
Student 2: “tree”
Student 1: “happy”
Student 2: “green”
The student who doesn’t hesitate or repeat a word is declared the winner. To make things more challenging, you can instruct them that all the words to be said should be nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.
3.”Umm” game (For older kids) — Write thought- provoking questions such as ” If you have a million dollars, what will you do?”, or “If you have any superpower, what will it be?” on the board. Call on a student and ask them to answer a question. They should be able to answer it in 5 sentences or more without using any fillers such as “umm”, “ah”, or uh”. If they use any fillers, mark it next to their name. The student who gets the most marks will be “punished” by singing a song or dancing in front of the whole class. (The aim of this game is to help students practice their fluency in speaking English)
4. “Ghost” game (For younger kids) — Have the kids stand in front of you. Insert a flashcard of a ghost among the other flashcards that have been discussed. Show the the flashcards and have the kids say out the words or the sentences. When the “ghost” flashcard is shown, students should run away from you. The student that is caught is “punished” by answering a question regarding the lesson discussed.
• Basketball [hoop & ball] reward game– Children get point for their team if they get ball in the hoop. They are offered one of more throws as reward for good work/listening/behaviour/homework etc.
• Staring contest with teacher, ice breaker or reward game– first one who laughs is out. Winner gets point for team. Teacher to encourage funny faces & noises (and tickling) etc.
• Balloon pop [balloons, cards/money, safety pin] reward game – DD dragon money (or other incentive) hidden in balloon (blown up). Large number of balloons on the floor/in basket. Student closes eyes, selects balloon which he/she may then pop to get their prize
• Balloon blow up [deflated balloons, marker] reward game– variation of game above. Deflated balloons in basket/bowl. Each one has number written on it with permanent marker (teacher to prepare in advance, numbers written on inflated ballons). Numbers represent points for the team. Student closes eyes, selects balloon, and blows it up in order to reveal the number of points they have won.
• Concentration, vocab practice game – children sit in a circle, theme is selected (colours, animals, body parts, clothes, months). Sing song with hand clap movements “concentration, concentration now begins, starting with …… billy” Billy states first word related to theme and turn goes to next person (to the left), next person repeats previous word, and adds own word. Each player repeats previous word & adds new word. If unable to add new word, you are out. Winner gets reward or team points
